Justifiable Intoxication Pt.1

Something that never ceases to amaze me about the university life style is how people always, no matter how busy and stressed and ready to break down they may be, seem to find time for a beer. Maybe this is what the real world is like, I have absolutely no idea, but I love it. At the end of the day I can fully appreciate the need for something as simple, pure, and relaxing, as having a beer to unwind a little. But this got me thinking...

The Tragical Comedy or Comical Tragedy of Mr. Potter

This is my first post in forever, almost two full years, I guess I got sidetracked by life, as is wont to happen...I have so much that I've wanted to say but I've been doing the arguably healthy thing and venting through more abstract forms of expression, like music. A few caring individuals have encouraged me to write more though, so here goes I guess...

University Life 2: The Reckoning

So I had originally planned to post on here a lot more often than what I actually do, it was going to be my own personal record of my experiences in University, and that would have been spectacular. I failed at this task miserably by posting only when something angers me, less than half of what I had intended to write about. So I guess I'll use this post and my current free time to make up for that. Here goes...

The Student's Lament

Well, I'm exactly one week from being on my way back to the hometown after my first year of university. It's a bittersweet feeling, being finished the semester and hopefully having at least a 3.3 GPA for the term is exciting, but I'm not looking forward to the Summer at all.

Letter to my Aunt and her husband

My cousin recently passed away when he crashed his helicopter, to honor his memory I wrote my aunt a letter since I can't make it to the funeral because of school. Go ahead and read if you want.

My American History term paper

I'd like to apologize in advance for the length of this post, but I am fairly proud of myself for having written this paper and felt like sharing it here. I learned a lot in my research and I think anyone willing to read this paper would benefit knowledge-wise from doing so!

Short but Sweet & Sour

It looks like my body has finally had enough of the university party lifestyle, after having partied nearly every day since St. Patrick's I'm now sick. I woke up this morning with my throat so badly swollen that I couldn't talk and it took considerable effort to swallow the water I immediately reached for upon waking. I'm still unsure if this is a result of irritation from the amount of yelling one has to do in a noisy bar, or if I'm legitimately sick.

So Kiss Me, I'm Shit Faced (A Freshman Retrospective)

I'd like to start off by saying I hope everybody had as fun of a St. Patrick's weekend as I did. Started off with a Fred Penner concert on Friday night, met the man and got a photo and autograph, then went to a fairly epic bash on Saturday night and got absolutely shit faced listening to live Celtic music. I spent the better part of the night talking this girl into coming over to hang out with my roommate (Wingman Level: 99) and she did. Not too sure what all happened and even if I was sure I wouldn't get into it on here.

Sweet Dreams and Clean Sheets

Now, I'm fairly certain I've posted these sentiments before, and probably about the same person, but I just seem to never learn my lesson when it comes to two faced people, and people who flock to me when they need something and run the opposite direction when everything is going well for them.

Student Life

I finished my first final exam today. I couldn't fully bring myself to study for any great length of time for this one. I guess my brain just kept telling me I was prepared enough. There's only 2 questions on which I was unsure of my answers, so I'm fairly confident, only 3 more exams this semester and then I get to go visit the family. Wish me luck

I (heart) MRU Girls

So some of my classmates and I were talking about how awesome it is to go to a school in which roughly 65% of the student body is female. We further discussed that we should make shirts that say I <3 MRU Girls.

This Blog Post Has No Title

As many of you are by now aware, I am a first year university student who is re-entering a scholarly environment for the first time since 2008. For various reasons which for the sake of brevity I will not outline here, but can be found under various posts with the "school" and "Calgary" tags,

Welcome to Strangeland...

As I sit here attempting to do research for a paper that's due Tuesday morning, I can't help but let my mind wander every now and then. I've been doing some self-analysis to try to figure out why in most of my courses, despite my regular input, my participation marks are fairly low. I've realized I've been self censoring to a degree.

My Views on Occupy Wall Street

Now, I'm sure that many will disagree with these views, and that's completely fine. That's what the comment section is for.

Allow me to preface this by saying that I am a first year university student, minoring in Political Science, and only have a low level of understanding of all the nuances of such a situation. That being said, it's likely a higher level of understanding than many OWS supporters and detractors. If you want to lecture me about my views, or flames me for getting something wrong, keep this in mind.

My Clique Should Be Cancelled...

I felt that since I've mostly posted cynical rants, and angry stuff on this page, it was time to thank everyone who's been there for me, and helped me through some tough stuff.

Things No One Tells You About University (part2)

I figured it was time to make a few more points about university life. Unfortunately, these ones are a little bit more pessimistic than those mentioned in Part1, but I feel they still hold truth.

Things No One Tells You About University (part 1)

As any one who has read my blog before knows, I began my first year of university this fall. This was after 3 long years out of school, busting my ass in dead end jobs, and in a constant flux of employment/ unemployment due to a terrible job market.

There's a lot to be said about the differences between the real world and the world of academia. Everyone, of course will have differing experiences, but I've attempted to compile what I feel are fairly universal truths about post-secondary education. Based on my experiences so far, and the experiences of others around me.

I've written a few points below, more will follow in the coming days.

Hatin' Ain't Nothin' But Motivation

It's 11:33PM on October 31st as I begin to write this. Halloween, my favorite time of the year is almost over. I can't say I'm necessarily sad to be leaving the season behind. Being a university freshman on Halloween is the equivalent to bringing a knife to a tank fight. No amount of mental preparation could have gotten me ready for the insane amounts of alcohol I've consumed over the past 3 days.

I Have the Body of John Wilkes Booth

On Tuesday I applied for a travel study program that would earn me 6 credits toward my BA History degree. I won't know for at least a few days whether or not I'll be accepted but I'm keeping my fingers crossed in the mean time. I've never travelled outside of Canada before so I'm waiting for acceptance, then immediately applying for my Passport upon acceptance.

Personal Growth? Or Prevalent Boredom?

I received an email today from one of my professors asking me to volunteer to help with my school's upcoming Open House as a representative of one of the programs. Sort of talk to prospective students about the benefits of this program for first year students. And for the first time I'm genuinely considering doing volunteer work for something other than coaching high school football.
